Robert Carroll Baker was born to Henry Irvin Baker and Mary Bailey on his grandfather's farm in Rappahannock County, Virginia on May 21, 1950. He was the sixth child of a total of eleven children. He grew up in Griffinsburg, Virginia and had to quit school and go to work when his father had a stroke in 1964.
On May 5, 1966 at the age of fifteen-sixteen days before his sixteenth birthday-he was burned in an accidental fire on a local farm. Everyone, including the doctors and nurses, thought that he had little hope of surviving the burns. However, Robert would surprise everyone and be completely healed. Not one scar would remain as evidence.
The suffering and ultimately the healing process is the story, Angel in the Fire. Two years after the accident, he would meet Ruby Jewell and a year and a half later, they would be married. They would have two children-Angela and Richard, and then be the proud grandparents of five grandchildren-Karley, Colton, Nicole, Katie, and Gracie.
During those years, Robert has been successful in several business ventures, including a well-known maintenance and cleaning service. Now retired, he hopes to spend the remainder of his life sharing the role that his faith in Christ has played in his personal moments of tragedy and success.
"Two years after the accident on a Saturday morning in the summer of 1968, I met a slim, dark, longhaired young lady... I knew instantly that she was the one that I would marry." Excerpt from Angel in the Fire
